Although this show has a few tired tropes common in 2000s anime such as the unnecessary beach episode and very gimmicky character archetypes, its overall energy and message are infectious and permeate the entire show. It has so many interesting structural decisions that feel designed to underpin the overall tale of a man learning to believe in the stubbornness and beauty of the human spirit. It feels like such a triumphant story of the hero’s journey. The first half does feel kinda childish at points, which is why I’m not in love with this show as a whole, but the childishness of that section feels purposeful to create an atmosphere of innocence for Simon that is shattered when Kamina dies. Similarly, the ethical disagreements between Rossiu and Simon in the 2nd half show how the developments of urbanized society create a sterile reliance on bureaucracy that becomes devoid of true care for humanity. It’s just wonderful how this whole show comes together as a inspiring exploration of developing confidence in one’s ability to make change and the human race’s stubbornness against their limitations.
